Who would have thought that all Persons Deprived of Liberty in Region 10 will be given gifts on Christmas at once?
That was what exactly happened on December 29, 2020 when Liceo de Cagayan University College of Law, in partnership with BJMP Regional Office 10, successfully conducted ‘Pamaskong Handog’ – A Gift Giving Activity for the PDL via Zoom platform. A total of 5,098 PDL in BJMP-run jails in Region 10 were given hygiene kits worth 130 pesos containing bath and laundry soaps, toothbrushes, sanitary napkins for female PDL, toothpastes, etc. The event having been done regionwide and benefitted all PDL in a particular region is considered an unprecedented first.
December 11, 2020 sealed the commitment of both agencies to a journey on public service as BJMPRO-10, headed by J/CSUPT ESTER GALVEZ PEPITO, Regional Director of the Jail Bureau, together with Liceo de Cagayan University President Dr. Alain Marc P. Golez and the Dean of Liceo de Cagayan University College of Law, Atty Manuel I. Cabrera, signed a Memorandum of Agreement which will allow thousands of Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) in Cagayan de Oro City to enjoy the Liceo H.E.L.P.S – the flagship program of the university that included Health, Education, Legal and Public Services – which seeks to contribute in the holistic reformation of our PDL.
During the gift-giving activity, Dean Cabrera remarked that the looks on the faces of the PDL who have not received visits for almost a year already, truly made every sweat, tear, effort and time exerted into making the activity truly meaningful and worth doing all over again. He also thanked the benefactors, law student officers, law student-volunteers and solicitors and all other private individuals contributing to the over-all success of the activity. The same gratitude was echoed by Liceo de Cagayan University President, Dr. Alain Marc Golez.
J/CSUPT ESTER GALVEZ PEPITO expressed profound thanks to the Liceo de Cagayan University President, Liceo Law College Dean, other school officials, faculty and students who were able to muster more than 700,000 pesos in a matter of more than a month from themselves and generous sponsors and benefactors and give gifts to PDL this season of Christmas – an important activity for the PDL especially this time of the pandemic when goods from their relatives come wanting due to health protocols and travel restrictions.
BJMPRO-10 endeavors to come up with a very special way to make sure that our brothers and sisters behind bars wouldn’t feel left out in this season, where their yearning to spend time with their families becomes deeper. It will give them the assurance that as the year is about to end, the efforts exerted to serve them will not end with it, but is rather taken to a greater height through strengthened partnership with the academe – Liceo de Cagayan University.
